The Gulf Fritillary or Agraulis vanillae is one of the easiest butterflies to spot on Bonaire. The orange wings with a little black in them make it easy to see in between the green and grey bushes. Sometimes you might confuse this one and the Monarch butterfly but when you come closer it is easy to distinguish the species. You can find this butterfly all over Bonaire, especially in the months around the New Year, when it’s the rainy season on Bonaire. Especially places with a lot of flowers are frequently visited by these butterflies. I often see this butterfly in the wet area around the LVV and in the hills between Bopec and Playa Frans where a lot of herbs are standing. Also in Kralendijk and Rincon and at other spots on the island you might see these beautiful butterflies.
The caterpillar of this butterfly has black with orange stripes on its body and sturdy hairs. These colors show other animals that it’s better to leave this poisonous butterfly alone.
