Black-necked stilt – Birds of Bonaire

The Black-necked stilt (Himantopus mexicanus) is a shorebird that you often see on Bonaire. It is known for its black and white plumage, long pink or red legs, a long neck, a thin black bill, and its warning signals to every other bird when they spot something or someone. This Black-necked stilt can be found in the shallow wetlands and lagoons where it catches aquatic invertebrates and small fish.

It is easy to find this bird on Bonaire, if you drive along the salt pans you will see them, as well in a lot of small lagoons and some places where rain water has been collected for a longer time.
