I think the Southern lapwing is one of the most beautiful birds you can see on Bonaire. This 30cm big bird is not the most rare one but I just like the colors and posture of this bird. The Southern lapwing can be found on a couple of places on Bonaire, especially in the grass around the LVV waterplant. Sometimes you can find it in and along lagoons with sweet water and grass around it.
The Southern lapwing (Vanellus chilensis) is looking for insects on the ground or it wades in shallow water. It likes grasshoppers and worms but will also eat small fish. This bird has a grey head with a black forehead and black forehead and black throat patch. The eyes and bill are mainly pink/red and it has a small plume on its head.
