With the Chattooga river feeding the waters from the North and its class II and III rapids, knew that it was a ripe playground for rafters and kayakers – all the more inviting. It was a perfect stop before heading into the headwaters of the Chattooga. We have stayed at site 51 and the one just past it on the lake and they were great sites! Georgia Power?s 155-foot high Tugalo Dam forms Lake Tugalo on the Tugaloo River. Bring your own boat or rent one at the nearby marina. The campground is tight to drive around but very nice. The biggest problems about Yurks 2 - 6 is they are down hill from the parking lot and the bathhouse. The Northern part of the lake up Chattooga became wider and shallower for a distance making it easier to spot any unnatural debris (an occasional beverage container or old shoe) – still litter was not an issue, I saw little if any. One of the shuttle drivers was hanging out in the water ‘cooling it’ and waiting for his group to return, so we chatted a bit – I guess there are several groups providing raft service in the area – coming into and out-of this boat ramp (single lane rd) had to be scheduled to make things work and they did it well. Explore the first day, and just maybe the next day the rafters would provide some ‘cheap’ entertainment, awesome. The left bank also provided some relief from the afternoon sun and heat, it was 1pm when I left the ramp – an hour later I was at the Tugaloo dam – below the dam was lake Yonah a smaller lake leading into lake Hartwell and then down the Savannah river to the Atlantic. Campers used the stairs to access the water. Its not the first time I’ve paddled up to such things – and certainly not something I dwell on (or at). Lake of anticipation – with other things going on (family) this summer – paddling Lake Tugaloo had been set aside for a month, not a big deal – I could justify it with family around – plus while enjoying fall, winter and spring paddles a little more than fighting the summer heat, the delay seemed to fit. 441 in Tallulah Falls, Ga. We stayed in Yurt 6 which was very private and had (fairly) easy access to a small beach area and excellent lakefront views. A very special place. A type of camping for everyone not too mention the Yurt Life! Get an alert when a campsite becomes available at Tugaloo State Park! Tent campers can choose between the developed campground or primitive sites located a short walk from the parking area. As far as comfort, the mattress is very firm but much better than the floor. Sheets or pillows – make sure to bring your own! Yurts usually have windows and a skylight, and in Tugaloo park, they also have electricity and furnishings. There is no designated swimming here but we waded and other campers were fishing from the shore. There’s no running water inside the yurt. Enjoy fishing, hiking, and picnicking. Now that is my kind of lake. All of the yurts are well spread out, so you don’t feel like you’re camping with your neighbors. Thank you! Make sure to get a cart key from office. Sure enough Mike C. and I had paddled together several times, one trip was the Suwannee at Holden Creek, it was good to see familiar faces. I recommend taking one of these camping mattress pads to make the futon cushier. This was the first time that I’d ever stayed in a yurt, and I really liked the convenience of staying in a yurt versus traditional tent camping. Lake Tugaloo is about a 600 acre lake which borders the Ga/Sc state line and fed by the Tallulah and Chattooga rivers. There are actually 5 other locations that offer similar accommodations. Hill is not as bad as I have read, but it is a workout for sure. Easier access to the lake is available at the South Carolina boat ramp. We had 4 adults and two kids in the Yurt. The quality riverbeds of the Tallulah and Chattooga, plus the commercial rafting dynamic made this one of the more inviting lakes for a summer paddle. Nice fireplace for the colder seasons. Tugaloo State Park Campground has 105 single-family (mixed-used) campsites and 11 walk-in tent campsites next to Lake Hartwell. It takes away a lot of the packing and work to set up camp when you first get in which is nice for short trips like ours. Lake Hartwell is nice, but I didn't sleep well. Lake Rabun – Ga, Tom Haynie (bacshortly) Owned and operated by the Georgia Power Company, Lake Tugalo is created by the Tallulah and Chattooga Rivers. The campground has drinking water, hot showers, flush toilets, a dump station and a laundry. The Park also has 2 boat ramps, 7 picnic shelters, 1 group picnic pavilion, beach, horseshoe pit, tennis court, volleyball court, a miniature golf course, playground visitor center, and numerous hiking and biking trails. Access other maps for various points of interests and businesses. The area became a parking lot as campers parked their golf cards there giving a lack of privacy. There is putt putt as well as tons of wildlife. Easy access to lake hartwell from most yurts. The incredible beauty of 1,000-foot walls rising straight up from the water?s edge and the possibility of truly trophy-sized largemouth bass make Lake Tugalo an interesting trip indeed. As I worked my way up the Chattooga another group (I think this was a Southeastern Expeditions group), with the water a little low and slow toward the end each of the outfitters were grouping the rafts together ‘like water bugs’ around a small john boat about 15 minutes out from the ramp – seemed like a good idea and a small rest-bit for the rafters.
